In the past, asphalt-based materials would have offered cost advantages, however, Asphalt pricing has risen significantly in the last year and a half. The materials using asphalt are generally highly filled, quite stiff, and offer very little or no elongation. Because of the stiffness, they tend to be somewhat brittle and difficult to form into irregular shapes, such as floor pans. They are also generally less tacky and would likely require some type of adhesive or physical means to hold it in place.

Butyl-based materials, even when highly filled, offer better flexibility and more elongation. Depending on the covering used, such as foil or film, butyl-based deadening materials are usually easier to form or press down in place, especially into corners and other irregular shapes. They are also easier to make tacky enough that they will stay in place without the use of physical fasteners. Butyl-based materials can be loaded with fillers to achieve the same or similar specific gravity as asphalt materials which gives them equivalent sound deadening properties. Butyl-based deadeners are also less temperature-sensitive than asphalt and therefore do not become as brittle at low temperatures or as likely to flow at high temperatures.
